Nehkhasi Sterling is a singer, songwriter, musician,
artist, designer, writer and poet originally from
Conshohocken, Pennsylvania. In poetry, he was first
introduced to, influenced and inspired by the Poetess “Nikki
Giovanni”. This experience with Ms. Giovanni sparked in him
a need to explore his experiences through the medium of
original pieces of poetry. Noting the works of Dr. Maya
Angelou, who has had a profound impact upon the writer.
While attending a program for youth at Cheyney University,
he, to his surprise, won a contest for “Best Original Work”.
He uses poetry to spark and ignite to healing of his soul
and hopefully for those that hear it. He has performed
several of his pieces in the Philadelphia area, for MACT;
Men of All Colors Together and Giovanni’ Room, one of the
oldest gay book store in the nation. 'GAAAYYYYY!!!!!!!' was 1st
performed January 18th 2009, at a Sunday morning service, at
The Metropolitan Community Church of the Lehigh Valley and
then as one part of three vignettes about separate
perspectives of personal gay experiences. Today he continues
to ponder his place in this society as well as all LGBT
persons and the medium that will allow that expression
artistically, while inspiring the desire for a New World,
where all are accepted and included!
